GİZEM CAN - GUM UP THE WORKS
The lexical meaning of the term ‘Gum Up The Work’ is to make something dysfunctional or to ruin something. In this series, I tried to block the functionality of everyday objects by attaching chewing gum to them, and to emphasize that the needs of the society that rely on materialism are indeed values that are rapidly consumed and not permanent, like the chewing gum itself. Considering that the function of the chewing gum is to make the human body believe that it is eating something, I am actually using gum here as a metaphor for humanity's self-sabotage.
'Gum up the Works', in which I am inspired by Pop Art as usual and highlighting the color as one of the main characters of my photographs, is a mischievous revolt against the daily mechanism of objects.
