ERDEM VAROL - RASTGELE İSTANBUL

As an artist, my biggest inspiration is Istanbul. Istanbul is a city with different stories popping up on every corner. Even when I travel to other cities, I find myself taking photographs influenced by Istanbul. And as years go by, I think I am beginning to resemble the city where I live. Being stuck between East and West, modernity and tradition, crowds and one’s self… Always on the move but at the same time immovable...

These pictures are the results of my everyday random encounters with Istanbul and shaped by the emotions that arise through this process. Therefore, I want others to see these pictures as documents that hold clues into my perception, muscle memory, and errors.

* Rastgele: (1) Random, casually, hit or miss (2) This phrase is said to people who are just about to fish, hunt or harvest in order to wish them good luck.
